Quantum Biology

How do plants turn sunlight into energy? How do birds find their way across the planet? How do our eyes turn light into vision? These questions may seem very different, but they all point to an exciting idea: some parts of life may depend on the physics of very small things.

Quantum biology is a growing field that explores how biology, chemistry, and physics work together inside living systems. In this seminar, students will learn how scientists study energy, light, and information in living cells, and why these ideas may help us better understand the human body and health.

We will look at real examples from nature and medicine, while also asking what we know, what we do not yet know, and how scientists test bold ideas with evidence.

Students will leave with a clearer sense of how life works at its smallest scales, and how the science of today could help shape the health technologies of the future.

Dr. Nirosha Murugan

Dr. Nirosha J. Murugan is a Canada Research Chair and Assistant Professor at Wilfrid Laurier University. Her research explores how energy, light, and physics shape living systems, with the goal of developing new technologies to better understand human health. She leads an interdisciplinary research program at the intersection of biology, physics, engineering, and medicine, and is passionate about making cutting-edge science accessible to the next generation of scientists.
